The Jewish Academy opened in September 2004 serving children in a Toddler through Second Grade program. On Tuesday, January 17, 2006 the JA received word that the Board of Regents of New York State, at its January 10, 2006 meeting formally voted to grant a provisional charter to the school.
To be “ Chartered by the Board of Regents” is a form of incorporation voluntarily selected by many nonpublic schools pursuant to Part 216 of the State Education Law. Most “chartered” education corporations are nonprofit and, as such, are tax exempt from local, State, and federal sales and property taxation. All are required to have a board of trustees, which is responsible for the governance of the institution. All are considered to be a part of the University of the State of New York.
